La Colombe d’Or

I completely forgot to mention this restaurant La Colombe d’Or when I wrote about Saint Paul de Vence. This is a lovely restaurant that is frequented by poets, artists and ofcourse movie stars !!!..The restaurant also happens to be one of the world’s best art galleries. The reason for that is because artists like Picasso, Matisse, Braque, Miró, Leger, Calder, Chagall and a host of other struggling artists stayed there and settled their bills with paintings… All this came about because Paul Roux, an aspiring painter and an innkeeper had a soft spot for starving artists like Pagnol, Giono, Prévert, Picasso, Chagall etc. As word of this generosity spread and his clients’ fame increased, the standing of La Colombe d’Or as a gastronomic and art temple grew. It quickly became a place to see and be seen. The café and restaurant expanded and an annex of apartments was added. Paul Roux died in the early 1950’s, but his son Francis and daughter-in-law carried on the tradition.

I would say that the only down side to this place is that you ll have to book in advance … and by that I mean a month or so in advance!

So if you are planning to visit the charming village of Saint Paul de Vence make sure you plan it ahead and book for lunch or dinner at this restaurant as well… trust me you will not regret it 😉

Found those 2 pictures on the net of Jack Nicholson and Bono leaving the restaurant!
