Fasting In Days Other Than Ramadhan

While fasting in the month of Ramadan is an obligatory for us muslims, there are also other days for voluntary fasting, such as:

  • each Monday and Thursday of a week
  • the 13th, 14th, and 15th day of each lunar month – Alayyam Albeed
  • six days in the month of Shawwal, the month following Ramadan.
  • Ashura Day (10th of Muharram in the Hijri calendar), (Only Sunni Muslims fast on this day. In Shia Islam it is prohibited.)

Fasting however is forbidden on the following days:

  • Eid Fitr (1st Shawwal) and Eid Adha (10th Thulhijjah)
  • Tashriq (11th, 12th, 13th Thulhijjah)
  • Arafat Day (9th of Dhu al-Hijjah in the Hijri/Lunar Islamic calendar) for those in Hajj
